Choosing A Dance Teacher

When learning to become a better dancer you will inevitably need to come into contact and learn from dance teachers. But how do you go about finding a good dance teacher? After all you don't want to spend your money on a dance class that you make little improvement in.

Finding a good dance teacher will mean different things to different people. Some professional dancers for example will only care that the dance teacher has great routines, they may not even be that concerned whether the dance teacher actually teaches the dance moves or not.

For most people a good dance teacher is one which will help them progress in that dance style and teach them new things. If you're not a professional dancer or at a similar standard it is best to learn from teachers that actually teach the various dance moves and dance techniques and how to do them.

Here are some of the qualities that make a good dance teacher: patience, good understanding of what they teach, explanation of how to do the dance moves, inspiring class (not dull), good routines, good dancer, positive person. This description isn't exhaustive of course.

The best quality any dancer could find in a dance teacher is a teacher who cares for them and believes in them. These rare teachers are able to get the most out of their students. They will help you out and give you advice, they're not just teaching to make a living. A dance teacher who believes in you will be someone who will go out of their way to help you and believe that you can succeed even when you may not yourself.

A lot of dance teachers just copy other dance teachers when they begin teaching even though the approach may not be suitable for their own students. A good dance teacher will be able to adapt to teach different levels and abilities not just professional dancers, but be able to pass on their knowledge and training to a beginner just as easily.

It is also very important to learn from dance teachers who will push you and not let you stay in your comfort zone. If you are pulling off the dance routines every single class that is great you're probably a really good dancer. But you want to go to dance teachers who will challenge you and make you learn new things. The more you are challenged the better a dancer you'll become.

In addition to these qualities, it is important that they inspire you and you enjoy the dance class. Of course if they're challenging you and you don't get the routines perfect it won't be as enjoyable as when you're acing the routines every time. But when you're in the dance class you should be able to say, "Yeah I'm liking this and enjoying this class."

A good class vibe is also something to look for. If you find a dance class boring to go to, then the dance class probably isn't for you! Don't think just because it is an art and there are lots of things to learn, that it has to be boring. A dance class where people are friendly to each other and there's a good vibe is always a good thing as well.

So if you enjoy the dance class, you have fun learning what you're doing and you're getting better with time, then it's probably the right dance class and dance teacher for you!
