Fred Astaire

A legendary dancer he was rated by many who worked with him as the greatest dancer they'd ever witnessed. He is quite possibly the most influential dancer in the history of film and musicals.

As the story goes Fred wasn't interested in learning to dance at first, but he would mimick his sister's steps and be able to pick them up easily. His skills as a dancer first came to people's attention when he worked on stage on Broadway and in London.

It was his tap dancing in particular which many regarded as among the best and responsible for his status as an expert dancer.

He went onto star in many films, many of which he appeared alongside Ginger Rogers as arguably his greatest dance partner. Although Rogers may not have had the technical precision, her style and confidence made her the ideal partner for Fred.

Astaire choreographed most of his routines on film, creating a unique style that he managed to make look simple despite the incredible creativity and skil it showcased. He was also a major influence in the American Smooth ballroom style.

Astaire won many accolades and awards throughout his career for his skills in dancing and acting. Though earlier than the time of many readers of this website, his back catalogue of musical films are a great education for any dancer, especially for any aspiring tappers out there.
